Eluned Morgan insists she’s ‘reserving’ her position on cuts

The first minister of Wales has insisted she will “reserve her position” on recent UK government welfare cuts – despite allegedly having already expressed her support.

Plaid Cymru Senedd member Llyr Gruffydd asked Eluned Morgan to confirm where she stood on the budget changes, which will include tightening qualification rules for Personal Independence Payments (Pips) – the main disability benefit.

“I am yet to get a firm understanding of how that will impact on Wales and, until I’m clear about the impact, I want to reserve my position in relation to that,” said Morgan.

But she added the increasing number of people receiving benefits was “not sustainable”.

Gruffydd responded by saying that was “very different” to what the Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens, had claimed, which was that the first minister had expressed her support for the reforms.
