A 35-year-old Australian man has appeared in court accused of using a hammer to smash the glass case housing the Stone of Destiny.

Arnaud Harixcalde Logan, from Sydney, was charged with malicious mischief during a private hearing at Perth Sheriff Court.

The alleged incident took place on Saturday afternoon at Perth Museum.

Mr Logan made no plea, was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court next week.

The building was evacuated as a result of the incident.

Perth Museum said the historic stone, used in the coronation of Scottish kings for hundreds of years, was not damaged.
