Russian volcano erupts after 500 years

A volcano in far eastern Russia has erupted for the first time in more than 500 years, which experts say may be linked to last week’s massive earthquake.

The Krasheninnikov Volcano in Kamchatka threw up an ash plume up to six kilometres (3.7 miles) high overnight.

The last recorded eruption of Krasheninnikov was in the 15th century, according to the head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team.

The volcanic event may be connected to a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake which hit a similar area last week, with Russian experts warning strong aftershocks would be possible for several weeks after.
