Man arrested after arson attack on bar

A man has been arrested following an arson attack on a bar in Armagh.

Police said they received a report of the fire on Irish Street at about 20:55 BST on Monday evening. Firefighters attended and extinguished the fire.

The 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and arson with intent to endanger life.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said two people were taken to Craigavon Area Hospital following initial treatment.

Police have said the road remains closed at this time.

Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh, Dáire Hughes, commended the emergency services for their response in what was a “frightening experience” for those in the area.

“Police will remain in the area over the coming hours as their investigation continues,” he said.

“My thoughts are with anyone who may have been injured or impacted by this incident.”
