Police are appealing for information after “significant damage” was caused to a Roman wall in Lincoln.
Lincolnshire Police said they received a report of damage to the ancient wall and gateway between the car parks at City Hall in Beaumont Fee at 09:18 BST on Sunday.
Following an investigation, the force believes the incident happened just after midnight and said their efforts were now “focused on identifying a suspect”.
Councillor Joshua Wells, portfolio holder for inclusive economic growth at the city council, said staff were “shocked and saddened by the mindless act of vandalism”.
Wells added: “This scheduled ancient monument is part of the city’s rich history and, as such, our CCTV team is working with Lincolnshire Police to help them identify a suspect.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
