Irish band uses music festival as pro-Palestinian protest stage

During the set, a massive Palestinian flag was projected behind the band, flanked by the message: “Israel is committing genocide. Use your voice.” Additional slogans, including “Free Palestine,” were also displayed. Social media footage from the show showed a handful of Palestinian flags being waved in the crowd.

This isn’t the first time Fontaines D.C. has used a major music event to criticize Israel and the war in Gaza. At the Rolling Stone UK Awards in November—where they won Album of the Year—guitarist Carlos O’Connell used his acceptance speech to denounce Israel and its leadership.

“I don’t know, I think there’s only a few words that need to be said,” he began. “And I’m surprised it’s the first time they’ve been said tonight: Free Palestine. F**k [Benjamin] Netanyahu. F**k Zionism,” he declared, drawing loud applause from the audience.

Previously, the band also canceled a performance in Istanbul in response to the anti-Israel BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) group’s campaign urging artists to avoid the Zorlu PSM venue. Activists claimed the venue’s parent company, Zorlu, should halt all energy supply to Israel “as long as it continues what the International Court has acknowledged may constitute genocide.”
