‘It’s a terrible thing to hear a man drown,’ says survivor

A World War Two veteran who survived the deadly sinking of a warship said memories of the incident will stay with him for the rest of his life.

John Eskdale was onboard HMS Charybdis, which sank in the English Channel in 1943, after being hit by German torpedoes.

He grew tearful as he recalled those hanging on to the ship drowning, which he described as a “nasty thing to hear”.

Friday marks 80 years since Japan surrendered in the war, an event commemorated as Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day).
