Man admits murdering customer in bank

A man has pleaded guilty to murdering a customer inside a branch of Lloyds Bank in Derby.

Haybe Cabdiraxmaan Nur, 47, of Western Road, Derby, was charged with the fatal stabbing of Gurvinder Johal, 37, who was killed inside the St Peter’s Street branch just after 14:30 BST on Tuesday 6 May.

Appearing in the dock at Derby Crown Court, Cabdiraxmaan Nur had a Somali interpreter as he entered his guilty plea in front of Mr Johal’s family and friends sitting in the public gallery.

Judge Shaun Smith KC set a provisional sentencing date of 29 October.

The court was told Cabdiraxmaan Nur will serve a “life sentence” with a starting point of 25 years, “subject to mitigating and aggravating factors”.

Turning to the defendant, the judge said: “You will be sentenced on 29 October for this offence, you will receive a life sentence.

“The term that you will be required to spend in prison will be decided on that date, until then, you are remanded into custody.”

Mr Johal had been at Lloyds with the bank holiday takings from his Hen and Chickens Bar and Grill in Shelton Lock, a family friend said.

He had just returned to Derby from a family trip to India with his wife, children and extended family.
