Meghan Markle and the rise of princess manicures

BB cream nails, princess manicure and water rose are just some of the new names for the natural pink nail look set to dominate the season.

“This trend is part of a larger ‘minimalism’ wave in beauty—returning to simplicity, essence and what feels clean and real,” says Anna Roza, owner of Nail Studio in Kfar Saba. “Women today want less acrylic or artificial nail work—they want a natural look that still appears polished. I think this trend reflects the current mindset in Israel; clean, neutral nails are calming and visually pleasing.”

“Clean Girl Look fashion emphasizes simplicity, cleanliness and natural elegance, and it has now reached nails,” adds Lital Hai Sitcol, marketing manager for L’Oréal Israel’s consumer products division. “The style communicates effortless grooming, like ‘I woke up this way,’ with careful attention to detail. Nails are typically short to medium, rounded, in natural pink or nude tones, sometimes milky or semi-transparent, with a clean, glossy finish. The trend also aligns with the recent move away from gel nails. It’s convenient—you can do it at home, on your own time, and for less money.”

However, many social media examples aren’t actually DIY: “The Instagram inspirations often use gel,” Roza says. “Even for a natural look, this level of polish requires professional nail care. Classic manicure steps like cuticle work, shaping, nourishment and applying regular polish are still necessary. Maintenance is part of achieving this style.”

Royal inspiration

“About a year ago, some women began leaving gel behind and opting for ‘bare’ nails with no polish. Once that trend caught on, we saw a new wave of nail grooming: short, neatly shaped nails, not square or almond, painted with soft pink polish,” explains content creator Gal Salomonsky. “We called it the ‘princess manicure,’ inspired by royal women—Princess Diana, Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle—who favor pink nails. It’s not just a choice; it’s palace grooming protocol. Bold colors are off-limits, so they stick with natural or soft pinks, a trend set to explode this summer.”

Why now?
“There are a few reasons,” she says. “First is global instability—not just in Israel. Historically, times of uncertainty drive people to seek comfort, often expressed through beauty. In the last century, we saw this with lipstick purchases; now it’s reflected in nail care.

“Second is modern nostalgia. We’ve been in the Y2K trend era, which featured bold, shiny pinks. Today, that trend is softer, with transparent pinks. It’s also seen as luxurious and aligns with the quiet luxury trend—subtle sophistication that insiders recognize.

“It’s important to remember that one dominant trend doesn’t erase others. Other nail trends are thriving alongside it. Not everyone follows the same pattern.”
