Canadian police arrested a 28-year-old Muslim man in Montreal after he allegedly threatened an Orthodox Jew shortly before the start of the Jewish Sabbath, police said Sunday.
The confrontation, captured on video Friday around 4:40 p.m., showed a man dressed in traditional Muslim attire, including a keffiyeh headscarf, shouting antisemitic threats, including “We will kill you.”

Montreal police said officers quickly tracked the suspect and placed him under arrest. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court. The department’s hate crimes unit is leading the investigation.
The incident comes amid a rise in reported antisemitic attacks in Montreal in recent weeks. In one case, an Orthodox Jewish man was assaulted in a park in front of his children. Video of the attack, which showed the victim being beaten and his kippah thrown into a fountain, drew widespread outrage.
San-Laurent Mayor Alan DeSousa said police patrols and security measures will be increased in the neighborhood, and he plans to meet with Jewish community leaders to address safety concerns.

In a statement reported by CBC, Montreal police said investigators would continue working to “shed full light on the circumstances of this criminal act.”
The case has been forwarded to Quebec’s attorney general’s office for possible charges.
