Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and several Cabinet ministers launched sharp criticism at media outlets during Sunday’s government meeting, calling for structural changes to promote a more right-leaning communications policy.
According to remarks made at the meeting, Netanyahu questioned the need for Army Radio, a military-operated radio station. “Why do we even need a military station?” he asked. “The defense minister and the communications minister should examine the matter of Army Radio.”
Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi called for the establishment of a communications committee “to promote right-wing policy,” while Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli accused Israel’s public broadcaster and specifically its Arabic-language channel, Kan 33, of incitement. He also targeted the liberal daily Haaretz, claiming many human rights organizations rely on it and that the paper “causes tremendous damage to the state.”
