Ultra-Orthodox give up on formal draft exemption law and agree to principles document

The ultra-Orthodox have relinquished their fundamental demand for a formal draft exemption law and announced they will settle for a principles document outlining sanctions if they fail to meet recruitment targets. This was revealed to ynet. The document states that from day one, draft evaders will have their driver’s licenses revoked, be banned from leaving the country and lose subsidies for academic studies. Additionally, if recruitment targets are not met after one year, evaders will lose their right to participate in the “Mechir Lemishtaken” (affordable housing) program and will forfeit property tax benefits and National Insurance allowances for Torah students. Daycare subsidies will be provided in proportion to meeting recruitment targets.
