Montreal police launched an investigation into a suspected antisemitic attack in the city, captured on camera. A 32-year-old Jewish man was attacked while his small children were by his side. According to the CBC network, the assailant, who is clearly visible on tape, has yet to be apprehended.
The city’s police spokesperson, Caroline Chèvrefils, said officers responded to a 911 call about an altercation at the corner of l’Épée and Beaumont avenues at 2:45 p.m. ET. and arrived at the scene but the assailant had by then escaped. According to the police, the Jewish man was repeatedly beaten and was hurt but was not in danger for his life.
The clip showed the ultra-Orthodox Jewish man viciously attacked while one of his daughters shouts out. The attacker then beats him to the ground. He later throws his victim’s kippah into a nearby water fountain.
Jeremy Levi, the mayor of Hampstead, a municipality within Montreal, who posted the video on his X platform, said the attack was “beyond deplorable” and an “outrage against basic human decency.” He said Jews will be defended every time, without apology.
